Oenologist - Angel Mendoza
|
|
Renowned Argentine Oenologist, Angel Mendoza, has reached celebrity status among Mendoza's wine scene. Working as the premier winemaker at several wineries in the region, Mendoza is known as the steady hand in expanding Mendoza County's great successes and growth in the industry. And delightfully, shares the surname with the wine county he hails from.
After completing his degree in 1971, Mendoza joined the team at Peñaflor and for 25 years acted as the premier winemaker of Peñaflor's Trapiche.
Trapiche has been producing wine since 1883 and is often sited by
Wine and Spirits Magazine's Value Brands of the Year. In 2001, Angel Mendoza was awarded “Argentina's Winemaker of the Year” by his colleagues for dedicating 23 years to ensure Trapiche's success.
Now entering retirement, Mendoza started his own winery with the help of his daughter, Maria Laura, and two sons, Juan Manuel and Nicholas Lucas - a legacy to leave on to future generations. Picturesque Domaine St. Diego in Lunlunta, Maipú. - rife with charm and personality, is the fruit of Mendoza's many years of labor.... with attention fully focused on only the best vines producing a limited number of high-quality wines. |

Domaine St. Diego's signature sparkling, Brut Xero, was inspired by Italian Prosecco makers, noting that Italians started making sparkling wines 200 years before the French. Paradigma came from the desire to break the paradigm that quality red wines must spend time fermenting in oak barrels. Domaine St. Diegoset out to make a quality red wine without using barrels, instead, relying on the fruit and terroir to exhibit the wines flavors. Then comes his personal favorite, Concierto 5, beloved for it's richness, depth and full-bodied character. Enduring an opposite fate of Paradigma, Concierto 5 is 100% Malbec, oaked 100% of the time. Concerto 5 - t he swan song, inspired by Angel Mendoza's philosophy on wine-making: "...an art, most like a musical work, with a conductor who guides the many other hands that are involved in the production of the end result: a bottle of wine.".
